Import a Car from Japan to the USA

R34 Skyline, Supra, NSX, RX-7, Evo, Silvia — and kei trucks. Here is exactly what is legal to import right now, how the process works, and what it costs landed at your port.

2001
Built in 2001 or earlier → legal to import today.
The 25-year rule exempts a vehicle from FMVSS and EPA certification. It is counted from the month of manufacture, not the model year, so more cars qualify every single month. Declared at entry on DOT form HS-7 (box 1) and EPA form 3520-1 (code E).

R34 Skyline buyers: BNR34 GT-R production ran January 1999 to August 2002, so 1999, 2000 and 2001 cars are eligible now and 2002 cars become eligible month by month through 2027. Send us the exact chassis number and we will confirm its build month before you commit.

Halo cars such as the R34 GT-R and Supra RZ trade in a volatile collector market; treat the ranges above as orientation only. Every quote we send is tied to a specific chassis, auction sheet and grade.

Not yet eligible: anything built after 2001 — including 2002+ R34s, the R35 GT-R, and modern Alphard, Crown or Hiace. Vehicles under 25 years must meet full FMVSS and EPA requirements, which JDM-market cars do not. We export those to other countries, just not to the USA.

How It Works

The US Import Process, Start to Finish

1
Tell us the car and your state
Model, chassis, grade, budget, nearest port. We confirm the build month is past the 25-year line before bidding.
2
We shortlist from auctions and dealers
Translated auction sheets, photos, grade and honest rust and accident-history notes.
3
Bid and purchase
You set a maximum; we bid on your behalf and send the invoice on a win.
4
Export clearance in Japan
De-registration, export certificate with certified translation, inland transport to port.
5
Ocean freight
RoRo or container. Container suits high-value cars and fits up to four kei trucks per 40ft.
6
US customs entry
Your broker files ISF 10+2, the entry, DOT HS-7 box 1 and EPA 3520-1 code E, and pays duty.
7
Delivery and title
Trucking from port to your address; you title and register with your state DMV using the entry paperwork.

Paperwork you will end up holding

  • Japanese export certificate + certified English translation
  • Commercial invoice and bill of lading
  • DOT form HS-7 (box 1 — 25 years or older)
  • EPA form 3520-1 (code E — 21 years or older engine)
  • CBP form 7501 entry summary from your broker
  • Auction sheet and inspection photos

USA Import FAQ

Questions We Get Every Week

Can I import an R34 Skyline to the USA legally?
Yes, if it was built 25 or more years ago. BNR34 GT-R production ran from January 1999 to August 2002, so 1999, 2000 and 2001 cars are legal to import today, and 2002 cars become eligible month by month through 2027. Eligibility is judged on the build month shown in the Japanese export certificate, not the model year, so always confirm the exact chassis before paying a deposit.
How much duty will I pay on a JDM car?
Passenger cars are dutied at 2.5% of the customs value under HTS heading 8703. Light trucks, which includes kei trucks, are dutied at 25% under heading 8704 — the so-called chicken tax. Your customs broker confirms the final classification at entry.
Do I need a customs broker?
For a commercial ocean shipment, in practice yes. The broker files ISF 10+2 before the vessel sails, lodges the entry and the HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 forms, arranges the customs bond and pays duty on your behalf. Budget $300–$950 depending on the shipment. We work with brokers at each port and can introduce you.
Can I register a JDM import in my state?
For a normal passenger car past 25 years, generally yes, using the customs entry paperwork and the translated export certificate. Kei trucks are the exception: several states restrict them to farm, off-road or low-speed use, and positions have changed in recent years. Tell us your state and we will confirm the current position in writing before you buy.
RoRo or container?
RoRo is cheaper and fine for ordinary cars. Container is more secure, allows parts to be shipped inside the vehicle, and is what we recommend for high-value collector cars. A 40ft container also takes up to four kei trucks, which sharply cuts the per-unit freight cost.
How long does the whole process take?
Typically six to ten weeks from auction win to collection at your US port: roughly one to two weeks for purchase, de-registration and export paperwork, two to four weeks on the water depending on port, and one to two weeks for customs clearance and release.
Can you find a specific car for me?
Yes — that is most of what we do. Send the model, grade, colour, maximum mileage, budget and how long you are willing to wait. We watch Japanese auctions and dealer stock and send candidates with auction sheets and photos before anyone bids.
